What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is a great treatment for incontinence. The pelvic muscles support the pelvic floor and if they’re not functioning properly, it can trigger incontinence. Physical Therapy involves the pelvic floor muscle group, which is responsible for a variety of functions. Exercise should be the first line of defense. Pelvic Floor Strengthening can really help this condition.

The goal of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is to increase the recruitment of muscle fibers for the ultimate goal of muscle hypertrophy.

What is Pelvic Floor and what does it do?

It's a group of muscles in the Pelvis that help maintain continence.

Treatment Plan

Exercise progression can go in the following order:

  • Supine, hips elevated
  • Supine
  • Side-lying
  • Sitting
  • Standing
  • On toilet
  • During intercourse

Key Strengthening Exercises

  • Postural Training (start with the pelvis in neutral alignment, palms turned out, ER shoulders, lift chest up. Chin tucked, scapula retracted – hold for 10 seconds.) Can progress to upper neck/back strengthening, scap retraction, shoulder ER, trunk flexors, hip extensors, knee flex & Ankle dorsiflexors with stretching to neck extensors/ scalene/levator scapulae/pectoral muscles/low back extensors/hip adductors)
  • Abdominal Strengthening (screen for diastasis recti)
  • Pelvic Floor Strengthening and Awareness Training (Kegels are the key to start with 10 reps, 10 count hold & 10 count relaxation)
